The forbidden underworld of book trafficking is finally caught on tape. I can see this being a Dateline special edition with undercover agents and sting operations. As funny as it sounds, there was over $10,000 worth of books stolen from a campus library at Colorado State University-Pueblo and the bookstore at Pueblo Community College.
The total value of the stolen books is estimated to be more than $10,500. The suspects, who are not currently students, hid the books under their jackets or inside of backpacks and left without paying. The books were then resold at area pawn shops. Pueblo County Detectives say they used the surveillance footage in conjunction with witness statements and other investigative work to identify six suspects in what they call a “theft ring.” Five of them currently have warrants for their arrest.
Now the police are calling the operation a theft ring. I guess the term is appropriate but it sure seems like a stretch when we are talking about books. I went to college so I do know that they are indeed valuable or at least expensive. I can think of several college text books that were worthless.
I think the interesting aspect to this situation is that video surveillance helped capture a crime ring when its initial priority was most likely safety. This event helps to demonstrate the versatility of video surveillance as a tool that casts a wide net as far as its ability to provide solutions to multiple problems.
